Our department maintains a strong commitment to engaging with our students.  We offer a career development course for our majors and unique opportunities to build leadership skills and connections through our Ambassador Program. All students also can engage and building community with other students through our Sociology Student Organization (SSO).  And, we proudly host the Gamma chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta International Honor Society for Sociology.

Sociology Ambassador Program

Students who would like to be more engaged in the department, grow their professional/leadership skills, and gain mentorship from a graduate student can become a Sociology Ambassador by registering for SOC 199: SOC Ambassadors.

This course includes weekly sessions to train in major/minor/departmental policies/resources as well as leadership development programming from university units. Leadership, communication, teamwork, mentoring and problem-solving skills will also be acquired. Ambassadors attend campus events on behalf of the department, visit local high schools, and will organize departmental events to build skills and engage with their community. Each Ambassador will also be paired with a mentor from our Sociology graduate program.

To be eligible, student should successfully complete SOC 199: Career Development. Registration information can be found on Course Explorer.

Sociology Student Organization (SSO)

This student led organization helps create a home for our majors/minors and promotes interest in sociology through activities such as speakers, presentations, and events related to professional development, community service, wellness, and inclusion.  

All majors are automatic members of SSO and can attend the activities offered to grow their professional network, become more involved in the department, and choose to take on leadership roles within the organization.

Alpha Kappa Delta - Honor Society (AKD)

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) membership is a earned honor for undergraduate, graduate and faculty in sociology who have a record of high academic achievement. Founded in 1920 for the purpose of forming a society in which students might become acquainted with each other's research. Learn more about Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society.

Application for Membership

Eligibility and Benefits

  • Major or minor in Sociology and/or Criminology, Law, and Society
  • Completed at least 12 hours of SOC coursework
  • Overall UIUC GPA of 3.3
  • Overall SOC coursework GPA of 3.0

Joining AKD has a lifetime membership fee of $50. Membership Fees are given to the Sociology Department main office: 3210 Lincoln Hall, 702 S. Wright Street Urbana, IL (Directions).  NOTE: Fees are to be turned into the Main departmental office NOT the academic advising office.
