
This year, the Department of Sociology is proud to present our outstanding alumni award for a PhD graduate to Neil MacKinnon. Dr. MacKinnon graduated from the UI’s sociology department in 1970. Following their time here, Dr. MacKinnon spent almost their entire career as a Professor at the University of Guelph in Ontario where they are now Professor Emeritus. Across their career, Dr. MacKinnon was the author of three books including Symbolic Interactionism as Affect Control, Self-Esteem and Beyond, and currently has a book in press entitled The Social Psychology of Morality. They have also co-authored a book and published numerous papers. This work has appeared in such journals as Social Psyhcology Quarterly, Social Forces, Sociological Quarterly, and many more. Dr. MacKinnon is also the recipient of numerous awards including the American Sociological Association Altruism, Morality, and Social Solidarity Section Distinguished Career Award, and Social Psychology Section Cooley-Mead award. We are therefore pleased to honor Dr. Neil MacKinnon.
