Chloe E. Bird-UI Sociology Outstanding Alumni Award

We have the distinct honor of announcing Dr. Chloe Bird as the 2023 Outstanding Alumni Awards recipient. Every year our Sociology at Illinois alumni make us proud through all the work they are doing in their communities and the world. The Outstanding Alumni Awards are given to those whose work we want to highlight and specifically celebrate this year. We congratulate Dr. Bird!

Dr. Chloe Bird is the Program Director at the Center for Health Equity Research at Tufts Medical Center. She received her B.A. with Honors in Sociology from Oberlin College in 1986. She went on to complete her Ph.D., with Honors in Sociology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where she studied women’s health and healthcare, social determinants of health and gender, racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in health and health care. Dr. Bird is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Health Behavior, and a member of Women of Impact in Healthcare. She has published three books, including her first-authored Cambridge University Press book, Gender and Health: The Effects of Constrained Choices and Social Policies. In addition to over 10 book chapters, she has published over 70 peer-reviewed journal papers. Among her numerous awards, Dr. Bird received the William Foote Whyte career award from American Sociological Association Section on Sociological Practice in 2020 and in 2021, she was recognized by the American Sociological Association with the Distinguished Career Award for the Practice of Sociology. We congratulate Dr. Bird on being among the exemplary alumni of the department. Dr. Bird will be honored in a Fall ceremony.
