Yousra Mahmoud selected as a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellow

Help us congratulate our first-year undergraduate student Yousra Mahmoud for being selected as a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellow for the 2023 summer and 2023-2024 academic year. This award provides her with $15,000 of funding for tuition and fees and a $7,500 stipend.

Below are her words about the opportunity:

"I am honored to announce that I have been awarded the FLAS fellowships for the 2023 summer and 2023-2024 academic year to study Arabic, and I am grateful to the Center for African Studies for awarding me these fellowships. My name is Yousra Mahmoud, and I am a freshman double majoring in Sociology and English, with a minor in Arabic. As a heritage Sudanese Arabic speaker, I am excited to deepen my language skills and cultural understanding through these fellowships. My long-term goal is to get my law degree and specialize in human rights/immigration law. I believe that studying Arabic will be a valuable asset to achieving this goal and help me to better serve the Arabic-speaking communities that I hope to work with. With the FLAS fellowships, I will be able to immerse myself in the language and culture of the Arab world and gain a deeper understanding of its history, society, and politics. I am grateful for the support of the Center for African Studies and the Sociology Department, and excited to share my experiences with the community. Thank you for this incredible opportunity. "
