Many sociology majors pair their studies and experiences with a variety of other disciplines. Metztli (they/them) is a great example - they are a Sociology and Psychology double major and also double minoring in Child Health & Well-being and Gender & Women's Studies. Through this combination, Metztli discovered a great internship opportunity that blended all of her interests and passions together. Here is what they had to say:
My internship is an Undergraduate Research Internship under the Human Development and Family Studies program here at UIUC. I found this internship through my fall 2025 semester Professor. I am working under Dr. Tu. My internship is working on a project named ESSAMA. In my internship, I help to develop and identify resources that can be shared with families, and post on our website and Facebook page to share resources with these Latina/o families. In addition, I have worked on translating resources for our Spanish-speaking participants and coding data on excel.
What I enjoy the most about my internship is knowing that I am helping people in need. Especially, as a first-generation Mexican woman, this is important to me. I am also one of the first people in my family to go to a university, so this is crucial for me to bring resources for other first-generation students who may also be in the same boat that I was. When I first started applying to universities, I had no one to help me with it. I want to aid other first-generation latina/o students in having a smoother transition from high school to college.
