Brian Kwak is a Senior Sociology major with a minor in Business.
- How did you find this internship?
I have spent several months asking and looking for an internship and I am so glad that I was chosen to do what I am currently doing. Up until now, I wasn’t given a lot of opportunities to use this knowledge to do something so meaningful. The division of MGI, an accounting firm, is a hard but faithful organization that will teach me to pursue my future dream of becoming a sociology-related accountant.
Overall, I think I found my internship to be very interesting and enjoyable. My major is Sociology and my minor is business and so I am learning a lot through this experience. Working in the accounting firm is a great opportunity for me to use my sociology knowledge in real-life work
- What do you usually do for the internship?
For most of my internship, I used the knowledge that I learned to help out with a portion of the accounting firm's work which is to relay information, calculate data, and communicate with clients. I use my sociology knowledge to apply in some situations, learning to focus on teamwork in an organization while helping out in consulting, auditing, and taxation in an accounting firm.
The specific theories I have been applying to the internship are: Social Exchange Theory, Symbolic Interactionism, and Functionalism
- What do you enjoy the most about your internship?
I mostly enjoy the part where I communicate with my teammates and discuss the weekly report together. As a teammate, I take responsibility for my given duties and make sure to have done everything on time. After we are done with all the hard work, I love the time we spend where we give our opinions and input to the team. Also, watching how we all progressed as a team was incredibly fulfilling to see. I love how a small role like mine can impact greatly and influence the company in the bigger picture.
- Anything else you want to share?
If there was anything else to share, I would say that I was unclear as to what I enjoyed since freshman year. Due to COVID-19, I was stuck at home for the most of the time. My social life was miserable and my confidence was down. However, after going outside more recently and also participating in internships as well as courses with a more active working style, I realized how fun it is to talk with others and share my thoughts. I hope this experience will help me to shape the person I want to become.
