Abstract: Asef Bayat is Professor of Sociology and Catherine & Bruce Bastian Professor of Global and Transnational Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In this interview, he explains how his personal background has informed his research trajectory. We also picked Professor Bayat’s brain about the last decade or more of contentious politics activity in the Middle East, his interpretations of the 2011 Arab revolutions and the counterrevolutionary wave, and his ideas about innovations in the field of contentious politics scholarship.
