The C/NC option that was available Spring 2020 due to COVID has been extended to Fall 2020.

Here are some reminders around key Fall 2020 modified campus policies:

Drop Deadline

  • The deadline to drop a course without a grade of W and, for undergraduates, to use the campus Grade Replacement Policy, has been extended to 11:59 p.m. CST on Dec. 18, 2020.
    • This deadline applies to full semester, second eight-week courses and non-standard courses with an end date after Dec. 1, 2020.
    • Students who want to drop a course that has an end date before Dec. 1, 2020 should contact their academic advisor or college advising office to discuss available options.
    • Most course drops can be performed through Self-Service until 11:59 p.m. CST on Dec. 18, 2020, unless the drop puts the student below full-time enrollment status. Dropped courses at this point in the semester will not result in any refunds.

Credit/No Credit

  • The deadline to elect the Credit/No Credit grade mode has been extended to 11:59 p.m. CST Jan. 5, 2021.
    • Please note the timeline to select Credit/No Credit grading will be different than it was in the Spring 2020 semester; the deadline is after final grades are available.
    • As we are still working through the implementation details, the time window for students to select Credit/No Credit will not open immediately. Rest assured that all students will have an adequate opportunity to make the CR/NC selection, and the window for selection will extend beyond the end of the semester.
    • Election of Credit/No Credit for courses this term will not count toward applicable minimums as outlined in the Student Code Section 3-105.
    • For courses in which Credit/No Credit is elected and Credit is earned (letter grades of C- and higher), the credit is applicable towards major, minor and general education requirements.

In making decisions about dropping courses or the CR/NC option, consultation with academic advisors, college offices and the Office of Financial Aid for students receiving aid is strongly encouraged. Additionally, feel free to review the Office of the Provost’s policies website for more detailed answers to what will likely be frequently asked questions around the modified policies. The document further detailing the Fall 2020 Academic Policy Modifications as well as a companion document which provides an overview of the most common academic administrative accommodations available to students in any semester along with Credit/No Credit guidance and an FAQ are now available on the Office of the Provost’s website

As always, if you are facing exceptionally difficult or unexpected circumstances that may require other accommodations (e.g., an Incomplete, final exam conflict, withdrawing etc.) please review the below information and then seek assistance through your college office.

WHAT IS AN “I” GRADE AND AM I ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE AN “I” GRADE?

Incompletes (Assignment of “I”).   https://studentcode.illinois.edu/article3/part1/3-104/ “I Incomplete. Approved extension of time to complete the final examination or other requirements of the course. (Entitles the student to an examination later without fee, or to additional time to complete other requirements of the course. The final grade will be reported via the Online Grade Change system.)

Undergraduate Students

Only the dean of the student’s college may authorize such extension of time in individual cases. A grade of “incomplete” that is not removed by the end of the first eight weeks of instruction in the next semester in which the student is enrolled on the Urbana-Champaign campus becomes the grade of F. The exact date can be found on the Office of the Registrar Academic Calendars (http://registrar.illinois.edu/academic-calendars).  If the student receiving the incomplete grade does not reenroll on the Urbana-Champaign campus, the incomplete grade, if not removed, becomes an F after one calendar year. With the approval of the dean of his or her college, the student who has not made up an “incomplete” examination may be withdrawn from the course retroactively, provided such withdrawal is completed before the grade of “incomplete” automatically becomes a grade of F. In exceptional cases, a student who, because of absence for active military service, physical disability, or other sufficient cause, is unable to comply with the rule by removing the I grade within the specified time may be granted a limited extension by the dean of his or her college. A student whose status cannot be determined because of “incomplete” grades may register again only with the approval of the dean of his or her college. (See §§ 3‑313 and 3‑201.)”

MY FINAL CONFLICTS WITH ANOTHER. I HAVE MULTIPLE FINALS IN ONE DAY.  MY INSTRUCTOR CHANGED THE FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?

Please consult the Student Code https://studentcode.illinois.edu/article3/part2/3-201/ for the academic policies and regulations centered on conflict exams.

WHAT HAPPENS, IF I DO NOT TAKE THE FINAL?

Absence from Finals  https://studentcode.illinois.edu/article3/part1/3-102/
“Students who do not appear at a final receive a grade of ABS. This permanent grade counts as a failing grade.”
